This is page two of three for Palenque.  Palenque is unique in its Mayan architecture. Its brightly coloured stucco walls and detailed frescos along with its strong arched rooves are examples of  remarkable techniques which have stood the test of time and the test of the jungle. It is difficult to imagine the awesome appearance that these buildings would have assumed hundreds of years ago.

Stairway to Pacal, Palenque, Mexico

The entry to Pacal's burial site is extremely narrow and steep. Care must be taken when walking down it. A lady was killed one month before we visited this site when she fell down 40 of the stairs.

The cover of Pacal's sarcophagus provides a detailed portrayal of Pacal, i.e. Pacal the astronaut as some have suggested. It took 3 years to find and uncover this sarcophagus, which was extremely well hidden. As with many important rulers, six of Pacal's personal servants were buried with him
