Janitzio island is a small island centered in Lago de Patzcuaro. Its population consists entirely of tourism dependent Tarascan Indians. The island itself is similar to the top of a mountain. The climb to the top is very step.
It is amazing how many people live on the island whilst virtually no one lives on the shores of the lake. The island is extremely
crowded with houses but on the day we were there, there weren't many locals to be seen.
The statue of Morelos
The local fishing technique
A top the island is a huge statue of Morelos so large that it can be seen from Patzcuaro. Inside the statue is a mural of Morelos's life.
The fishing industry is quite significant in Patzcuaro. Above is a fisherman with his large nets. The nets were unlike any nets I had ever seen. The fish caught are small white fish, about one third of the size of sardines. They generally dry and salt the fish before selling them.
