Merida is a thriving metropolis of the Yucatan. Merida offers a mix of cultural buildings and modern Mexican life.  It is worth a visit.  The Yucatan is interesting as  its people and customs are different from the rest of Mexico.  This is mainly attributed to the fact that it was formerly a separate country.

For those who wish to shop, this is  a worthwhile port of call. One of Merida's main exports are hammocks. Hammocks of every size and colour are available. The extra large family size is best.

During the December period the streets are also lined with pinyadas (excuse spelling) and fireworks.

Whilst in Merida we attended a street concert held in the Zocalo which was being broadcast on TV.

Just outside Merida is a National Park wildlife reserve called Celestun. This is the home of thousands of flamingos. Some of these can be seen on the right.
